I’ve had my programmer hat on for the last several days, eyeball deep in magazine-style themes for WordPress. I had installed WordPress locally here on my laptop because I wanted to develop a magazine-style theme for my coaching website/blog. I got the structure of it done late, late last night and was SO proud of it…it is just what I’ve wanted for my site for a long time!
This morning I decided to install it in another directory on my site so I could play with some of the functions that need access to the Internet and…
I KILLED MY SITE WITH ONE WRONG CLICK!
It never ceases to amaze me how, after more than 20 years of programming, I can still do dumb, dumb shit like that!
Fortunately, I’ve done enough stupid shit like that over the years that I had backups of backups, so I got to spend today putting my site back online. Yee-haw – not quite what I thought I’d be doing. But since I had obliterated it anyway, I decided to load up the new site instead of restoring the old one, and I have to say it’s just lovely. If you wanna take a peek, here is the new look and here is a page from the old style.
So, my beloved Internets, here’s the lesson for today: ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR STUFF! NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING!!!
You must trust me on this.
Hey thanks for the reminder! I just did that yesterday — it was long overdue, but your horror story reminds me again that this is not an optional task these days (like if I have time or not.)
What I certainly DO NOT have time for, would be to try to restore an entire site if I lost it for any reason.
Being prepared is surely a virtue to cultivate — AND practice!
Thanks for the reminder, Suzanne 🙂
Oh, and your new site is awesome! Great work.
Nancy
WOW, Suz… I am liking the new look! 😀
It is such a good reminder for those who think they are untouchable. Thanks for making mistakes and allowing others to learn from them.
Nancy – you’re right – and it chaps my behind to have to take time out to do it, but when stuff like this happens – OH!! am I glad I do! lol
Kelli – thanks!
Mike – making mistakes is something I’m rather good at! lol But it does reduce the sting a bit to say to myself, “ahhh…another lesson to share so someone else doesn’t have to do this idiot stunt.”
Oops. Hate it when that happens but so glad you backed up everything.
It’s true that you’ll never fully appreciate the value of backups until you do something like this. I remember leaving some of my hard graft on a communal university pc a few years back, and was horrified when I arrived the next day to see the machine had been replaced! I never did get that stuff back…
