Earlier this year, Second Son and I attended a woodcarving class that my dad hosted and taught. We both wanted to learn and the bonus of extra time with Dad/Grandpa was the tipping point. So now every time we go out there, we spend evenings in The Shop carving.

When we were out there for Thanksgiving, he asked us if we’d like to carve some tree ornaments.

This is my first one – not bad, for a novice carver, eh? Still have to sand it and decide whether it’s getting painted, stained, or left alone.

The best part is how quickly I can do one now (about 1-2 hrs, depending on how many mistakes I have to fix along the way.)

Next up? Santa faces made out of egg-shaped pieces of basswood.
